Student arrested in JU for proxy in admission test

The Admission Committee has arrested a student who was going to be admitted to Jahangirnagar University by proxy (fraudulently admission exam was taken part by another) in the admission test in exchange for taka 3 lakh. The arrested student's name is Md Minhajul Abedin Al-Amin. He ranked 10th in the B unit admission test for the 2021-22 session.

On Tuesday, he was arrested while trying to get admitted to the Department of Law and Justice at the Faculty of Social Sciences Building of the university.

Detained Minhajul Abedin lives in the Gouripur area of Mymensingh's Fulbaria Upazila. His father's name is Md Abdul Latif. Minhajul passed SSC from Al-Hera Academy in Fulbaria Municipality and HSC from Fulbaria Government College.

Sudipta Shahin, chief security officer of the university, said, "Minhajul Abedin was brought to the security wing and interrogated. He initially denied the fraud but later admitted it. By seizing his mobile phone, he was found to be involved in a fraud ring. Later, legal action was taken against him as per prevailing law, and he was handed over to the Ashulia Police Station."

Acknowledging the issue of a proxy, the accused Minhajul said, "An uncle of mine named Shahinur, a student of Fulbaria Degree College in Mymensingh, arranged to take the exam through a proxy in exchange for Tk 3 lakh. But I don't know who sat for the exam instead of me. So, after repeatedly practising handwriting like him, I participated in Viva-voce.

Tapos Kumar Das, Dean of the Faculty of Law, said that the chairman's signature must be obtained for admission to any department.

"We check everyone's handwriting with the test book a second time. It is suspected that his handwriting was found to be inconsistent. Later we handed him over to the security wing.

To avoid such fraud, the University administration may introduce the biometric system in the admission test, and handwriting experts are arranged during the oral interview," the dean of the Faculty of Law said.
