No enrolment crisis of higher education this year, says UGC

The country’s higher educational institutions will face no crisis in enrolling almost all students who have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations this year, said University Grants Commission (UGC).

About 1.32 million students can enrol themselves at various higher educational institutions for honors and equivalent courses, UGC mentioned in a statement on Sunday.

Of these, some 60,000 seats are available in 39 public universities, 20,375 at 95 private universities, 872,815 at institutions under national universities, 60,000 at institutions under Islamic Arabic universities, 77,756 under Open University, 440 at two international universities and 10,500 under medical and dental colleges.

Besides, there are 23,330 seats are available in seven colleges affiliated under Dhaka University, 720 at four engineering colleges, 720 at six textile colleges, 5,600 in government and private nursing and midwifery colleges, 654 in 14 marine and aeronautical colleges.

Moreover, 3,500 seats in different institutes of Dhaka and Rajshahi universities, and 290 seats in affiliated institutions of Chittagong University, read the UGC.

UGC member Prof Muhammad Alamgir, however, said there will be a strong competition for admission in the preferred educational institutions and subjects.

This session, admission tests in 20 general and science and technology universities and six major agricultural universities will be held in a cluster system, he added.

And, the decision will be announced this week on whether the admission test at the engineering and technology universities will be held in a cluster system or not.

Some 1.36 million students passed the HSC and equivalent examinations this year while the results have been given by evaluating the results of JSC and SSC due to ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
