JU to take admission tests on campus, rejects UGC recommendations

Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities are not accepting the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC) to conduct admission tests in a similar pattern as Dhaka University (DU) and to set up admission test centres in divisional cities of the country.

Admission test for the 1st year undergraduate (honours) of 2021-22 academic year will be held in 5 units, on the university campus.

The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the Academic Council held on Monday (April 25) in the Senate Room of the University.

Before, an exchange meeting was held at UGC on April 7 with the Vice-Chancellors of the universities. Four universities (DU, RU, CU & JU) established under the 1973 ordinance were recommended to take a combined admission test and related issues of the public university were discussed at that meeting.

It was said that admission tests of more than 5 units cannot be taken in those four universities, and the department based fee cannot be taken. In view of this, Jahangirnagar University decided to take the admission test in 5 units instead of 10 this year.

It is also recommended that the other three (Rajshahi, Chittagong and Jahangirnagar) universities take admission tests following the pattern of DU and complete the admission process and also set up admission test centres in the divisional cities to alleviate the suffering of students and parents.

However, in an emergency meeting of the Academic Council yesterday, it was decided that Jahangirnagar University would take admission tests inside the university campus like always while maintaining its individuality and uniqueness.

In this regard, the University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Md Nurul Alam said over the phone, "Jahangirnagar University complies with the 1973 Act. In accordance with the Act, we have decided to take the admission test on the university campus while maintaining our individuality and uniqueness. The majority in the Academic Council gave this opinion."
