Jahangirnagar University (JU) has completed the admission process for the 2020-21 academic year leaving 34 seats vacant, as those students’ seats were cancelled.
Meanwhile, the admission seekers waiting on the merit list have applied for the opportunity against the vacant seats.
According to the registrar's office, a meeting of the Central Admission Committee of the university decided to close the admission process as soon as the class started.
The first class of the 2020-21 academic year was held online on March 9. Since then, the admission process has been closed.
In this regard, the Member Secretary of the Central Admission Committee and Deputy Registrar (Education) Abu Hasan said, "It is an ongoing process to cancel the admission and have the seats vacant. So far, 34 students’ seats have been cancelled their admission. According to the admission committee’s decision, the admission process has been completed with the commencement of the class."
In reply to a question regarding vacancy and migration, he added, "There is a problem with the migration system to keep admissions running after the class starts as many students want to turn off migration after starting class. The admission process is a software-based system now so it cannot be done in this process. It is closed thereby."
Meanwhile, the students awaiting admission against these vacant seats have applied to the Deans of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Studies, Faculty of Biological Sciences and Member Secretary of the Central Admission Committee.
The students mentioned in the application form, ‘We have not been able to get admission in any university yet. We are on the waiting list and let us be admitted against the empty seats. '
An admission seeker, who did not want to be named, said, "The university administration did not give any notice regarding admission even though the seats were vacant. Not finding anyway, I have applied with the admission committee and dean. I hope the university administration will consider and give us a chance to be admitted."
Asked if he had received any such application, Mozammel Haque, the dean of the university's Arts and Humanities Faculty, said, "Any such application has not reached me yet. Students have already been admitted in five steps. Now, if the seats are vacant, the Central Admission Examination Committee will decide whether to admit them or not. Admission for the next batch is under process. So I don't think anyone can be admitted now."
Performing the vice chancellor’s routine duties for the interim, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) Nurul Alam said, "I am aware of the vacancies. If it is decided in the meeting of the Central Admission Committee on the admission of vacant seats, then the admission can be done. The admission committee have to decide in this regard."
The general students are expressing leaving so many seats vacant as a waste of state resources and public money. Moreover, they termed not getting the opportunity to get admitted from the waiting list as discrimination and injustice to the aspirants.
