Flood seizes academic activities in Moulvibazar

Educational activities in some 151 institutions of Moulvibazar district remained suspended for nearly one month as flood water entered into those, hampering academic and educational activities.

Flood water inundated classrooms, veranda and playground of 351 schools and colleges in five upazilas of the district, according to the sources of District Education Office.

Of those, a total of 151 institutions remained closed due to the vulnerable condition.

However, educational activities in some of the affected primary schools have begun from June 23 after the Eid vacation.

Sources said there are 759 educational institutions in five upazilas - Rajnagar, Kulaura, Noulvibazar, Juri and Borolekha of the district.

Among those, only 17 schools were used as temporary shelters for the flood-affected people.

District Education Officer MM Abdul Wadud said the affected schools will be renovated soon and the teachers of those institutes have been asked to take necessary steps as no students shall be deprived of education.

Although the flood situation in five upazilas of the district was reported to be improve, the situation in haor areas worsened further as water stranded there.

People were seen returning to their homes and engaged in repairing and cleaning works.

Some 1,93,400 people of the areas were affected due to flood this year. The local administration authorities have provided 1.167 metric tonne of rice, 5,000 packets of dry food and Tk 1.34 million to the flood-affected people, reports UNB.

A total of 74 medical teams have been providing treatment to the flood-hit people.
