DU to allow only regular students at dorms after reopening

The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have decided to allow only the regular students to stay at its dormitories after reopening the university.

The decision came from a meeting of the provost committee, chaired by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Akhtaruzzaman, which was organised to discuss the health risks of students during the post-coronavirus period and overall atmosphere of the dormitories, reports BSS citing a press release.

Only those students who have studentship and enrolled through entry test will be allowed to stay at the halls as per the rules of dormitories.

Those who do not have studentship cannot stay at the halls in any way and have to leave the halls by the timeframe given by the authorities.

A total of five decisions were taken from the meeting held on Tuesday to reduce the health risk of the students. These included the move to bar non- students at the dormitories, improve the residential, educational and overall atmosphere of the halls, resolve the crowded room crisis and renovate the dorms.

The meeting also decided that no student will be allowed to stay on the floor of any room. If necessary, one can share beds with another student following due procedures.

Hall authorities will take measures to supply bedding in the rooms which do not have necessary accommodations.

Cordial assistance from all active student organisations will be needed to stop the ‘gono room’ culture and to prevent the lodging of non-students at the dorms.

It is expected that the “gono room” culture will be curtailed from the university if the aforementioned decisions can be implemented properly.

The release also said the university authorities will complete the renovation and cleaning of all the dormitories during the university closure.

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Education) Prof Nasreen Ahmad, Pro Vice-Chancellor (administration) Prof Muhammad Samad, Treasurer Prof Md Kamal Uddin and provosts of all the halls were present at the meeting.
