CU suspends former assistant proctor over Diaz murder

Chittagong University authority has temporarily suspended Sociology Department Professor Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, former assistant proctor of CU.

He is currently in jail over his suspected roles in the 2016 murder of Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury.

CU acting Registrar KM Noor Ahmed said administration made the decision on Sunday at the instructions of the vice chancellor under Section 15 (a) of the Employee (Skills and Discipline) Statute.

According to the decision, Anwar Hossain Chowdhury will, however, receive his living allowance.

On December 18 last year, Hossain appeared before the court on to request permanent bail.

But, the court dismissed Hossain’s petition and sent him to jail.

Diaz, who served as a vice-president of the CU BCL, was found dead at his home on the campus on November 20, 2016.

The body was found hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom.

Diaz’s parents are CU staffers.

The initial autopsy report said it was a suicide, but Diaz’s loyalists claimed rivals had murdered him and hung the body to cover it up

On November 24, 2017, Diaz’s family rejected the autopsy report and started a case with a Chittagong court accusing 10 people of the murder.

According to bdnews24, the case filed by Diaz’s mother Jaheda Amin Chowdhury with a senior judicial magistrate's court accused 10 people, including Anwar Hossain and Alamgir Tipu.

The others she has accused of killing her son are Jamshedul Alam Chowdhury, Rashedul Alam Jishan, Abu Torab Porosh, Monsur Alam, Abdul Malek, Mizanur Rahman, Ariful Hoque Opu and Mohammad Arman.
