Credible election requires effective role of media: Speakers

Speakers at a discussion have stressed on effective role of media for ensuring a free, fair and credible election.

They also urged the journalists to ensure data-based and fact-based journalism so that a fruitful election can be held.

The observations were made at a seminar, titled 11th National Parliamentary Election: The Role of Media, on Saturday.

Communication and Media Studies department of University Of Development Alternative (UODA) organised the seminar at its campus in Dhanmondi area of Dhaka.

Muhammad Sohul Hossain, a former election commissioner, was the chief discussant of the seminar. He acknowledged the necessity of positive role of journalists for election citing his previous experience in holding 9th parliamentary election, said a press release.

Mahmood Menon Khan, the executive editor of Sarabangla.net, also addressed the event. He stressed on ensuring availability of reliable information to fight against rumour.

M Mahbub Alam, the chairman of Communication and Media Studies department of UODA, presided over the programme. Lecturer Mahadi Hasan delivered the keynote speech.

UODA’s Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmed Ullah Miah, Registrar Prof Dr Iffat Chowdhury, Deputy Registrar Foyjun Nahar, Trustee Board Secretary Munir Ahmed, Lecturer Ismail Hossain Sirajee, Sarwar Ahmad, Nusrat Sharmin were also present at the seminar, among others.
