British Council has recently hosted a readers’ development conference by arranging a book reading competition, a flagship outreach programme of the organisation.

Principals and educational coordinators from different schools attended the conference.

British Council hopes that the book reading competition will bring the latest collection of “Best of British” resources for readers which include the best collection of fiction and non-fiction in English.

The competition creates access to “Best of British” resources, develops reading habit, especially in English, and helps acquire English language skill among young learners and adult students, according to a statement.

Under the programme, 600 teachers were involved in different activities like teachers’ training and career counselling. Besides, British Council has sponsored two of the coordinators for Book Reading programme for their CELTA course and 12 teachers for the BELTA Conference 2018.

The book reading programme reached around 32,000 students across Bangladesh who were rewarded for their outstanding performances. Both the coordinators and the students under the book reading programme got the opportunity to build up networks and new connections through British Council’s multi-dimensional cultural centre platform.

Sarwat Masuda Reza, Head of Cultural Centre of British Council, said, “This programme is our proud initiative for enlightening thousands of Bangladeshi students with the enriched contents of world literature.”

Currently, British Council is in partnership with 88 educational institutions, which includes schools, colleges, universities and Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA).
