Weeklong fire safety awareness programme at BRACU

Against the backdrop of recent fire incidents in the capital, BRAC University (BRACU) has undertaken a weeklong programme to create awareness among students, faculty and staff on fire safety.

The ‘Fire Safety Awareness Week’, started from Tuesday last, focuses on disseminating information about the existing fire fighting arrangements and what should be done in case of fires.

BRACU has taken a number of measures such as creating alternative ‘fire exit stairs’, replacing existing ‘fire exit doors’, installing more smoke and heat detectors and strategically placing blankets, towels and fire extinguisher balls to minimise hazards, said a media release received today (Sunday).

The university arranges fire drills at regular intervals and has a dedicated nine-member fire fighting team comprising one safety supervisor and eight fire crew, all available 24/7, the release added.

“We never compromise with safety issues of our students. BARCU has taken necessary steps to mobilise resources in order to ensure fire safety,” said Registrar of the university Lt Col Foyzul Islam (Retd).
