$125m ADB project to improve infrastructure of higher educational institutions

Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide US$125 million for a project to improve infrastructure of higher educational instituions and build capacity of IT professionals in Bangladesh.

University Grants Commission (UGC) held a meeting with ADB on the proposed ‘Tertiary Education for Competitiveness in Information Technology Project (IT)’ to this effect at UGC office in the capital on Wednesday.

Chairman of UGC Prof Abdul Mannan presided over the meeting.

University of Dhaka, BUET, Jessore University of Science and Technology, East West University will reap the benefits of the proposed three-year long ADB project, according to the discussion held at the meeting.

In-charge of ADB’s Human and Social Development Division Ms Gi Soon Song said, “ADB wants the best utilisation of the proposed $125 million project”.

UGC Chairman said under this project, the four universities will be able to produce quality graduates and contribute to develop Bangladesh as a mid-level income generating country by 2021.

UGC members Professors Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, Dr Dil Afroza Begum, Dr Md Akhtar Hossain, Dr M Shah Nowaz Ali, UGC Secretary Dr Md Khaled, Members of ADB’s Facts Finding Mission, representatives of four universities and high officials of UGC, among others, were present in the meeting.
