The local currency depreciated further on Tuesday against the US dollar mainly due to higher demand for the greenback for settling import-payment obligations.
Bangladesh Taka (BDT) lost its value by five paisa in the inter-bank foreign exchange (forex) market on the day, according to market operators.
The US currency was quoted at Tk 92.00 on the day against Tk 91.95 on the previous working day. It was Tk 89.90 on June 02.
Currently, the local currency is maintaining a depreciating mode against the US dollar mainly due to a higher outflow of foreign exchange following 'hefty growth' in import payments compared to the inflow in the last few months.
In the meantime, the local currency lost its value by Tk 6.20 or 7.23 per cent since January 2022. The dollar was traded at Tk 85.80 on January 08 last.
