The government will construct a two-storey expressway from Panchabati of Narayanganj to Muktarpur Bridge of Munshiganj with an expenditure of Tk 22.28 billion.
The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) cleared a project for the expressway to strengthen the transport connectivity between the two districts.
The approval came from the weekly ECNEC meeting held on Tuesday at the NEC conference room. ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina chaired the meeting through a videoconference from Ganabhaban, reports UNB.
According to the factsheet of the Planning Commission, the project titled ‘Widening the Road and Construction of Two-storey Road from Panchabati to Muktarpur Bridge” will be implemented in Narayanganj Sadar and Munshiganj Sadar upazilas by June 2025.
“If the expressway is constructed, the travel cost will come down by 62 per cent, while the waiting time by 74 per cent. The average speed of traffic will go up four-five times,” said a member of the Planning Commission, Md Mamun-Al-Rashid.
The main project operations include acquisition and rehabilitation of 44.50 acres of land, excavation and earth-filling of 7,01,114 cubic metres, pavement and related works of 10.75 km, construction of 14.79-km median and construction of 9.06-km expressway with ramp.
The ECNEC meeting approved a total of four development projects involving an estimated cost of Tk 39.03 billion (only additional costs of two revised projects were counted here),” said Planning Commission Member (GED) Prof Dr Shamsul Alam at a press briefing after the meeting.
ECNEC endorsed a fresh project titled ‘Improvement of Roads, Drainage Networks and Amenities Services of Mymensingh City Corporation’ involving Tk 15.75 billion.
The Mymensingh City Corporation will implement the project by June 2024. The project envisages improvement of roads, drainage networks and amenities services in the city.
The main project operations include construction of 475-km roads, 346-km drains and 17-km footpath.
The revised projects are Modernisation of Agriculture Information Services and Digital Agriculture Information and Communication Strengthening (1st revised) Project with an additional cost of Tk 412.0 million and Improvement and Widening of Charkhali-Tushkhali-Mathbaria-Patharghata Road (1st revised) Project involving an additional cost of Tk 445.7 million.
While clearing the two revised projects, the Prime Minister directed all concerned to stop the trend to raise the project cost and time, and implement the projects in due time instead, said Dr Shamsul Alam.
