CAB demands withdrawal of power tariff hike

Terming the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) a biased organisation, the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has demanded a rollback in the recent power tariff hike of Tk 0.35 per unit at the retail level.

When power tariff can be reduced by Tk 1.56 per unit (Tk 80 billion in total) by adopting a low cost electricity generation technique and load dispatch policy in merit order, the government has increased Tk 132.2 billion in power production expenditure illogically, it said at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Sunday.

A non-government consumers’ rights body, CAB also threatened to move to the court in case the government declines to meet the demand.

CAB Energy Advisor Professor M Shamsul Alam presented the keynote, with its President Golam Rahman presiding over the event.
