The country is going to be self-sufficient in egg production this financial year (FY20) with an expected output of 17.81 billion eggs, according to the government.
The egg sector’s turnover is likely to be more than Tk 124 billion during the period.
This was disclosed at the discussion meeting on the eve of the ‘World Egg Day 2019,’ held at the CIRDAP Auditorium in the city, organised jointly by the Department of Livestock, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council and World Poultry Science Association (Bangladesh).
While speaking as the chief guest, state minister for fisheries and livestock Md Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru said the country was close to achieve self-sufficiency in egg production in the last fiscal when per head availability reached 103 eggs. (17.11 billion).
"A person should consume at least 104 eggs annually," he said, referring to FAO's dietary guidelines.
"We are going to produce over 17.81 billion eggs this year, which means per head intake will be more than 107 eggs annually, he added.
A colorful rally was brought out in the city to celebrate the Egg Day.
World Egg Day is celebrated on the second Friday in October.
It was founded by the International Egg Commission (IEC) at a conference held in Vienna in 1996. The idea behind the day is to raise awareness of the egg's nutritional value across the globe.
