Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) has a sent a project proposal to the Planning Commission for developing land and shifting facilities of utility services to pave the way for construction of Arambagh-Babubazar Bridge-Jhilmil flyover project, officials said.

RAJUK officials said the city development authority would start the activities soon after getting approval to the Tk 4.23 billion support project, which will facilitate building the 10.2-kilometre flyover.

"We have sent a project proposal to the Planning Commission (PC) for getting approval. Soon after getting the approval, we will start shifting the utility services from the roads and make the land ready for building the flyover," a senior RAJUK official said Saturday.

He said the shifting of utility services like power distribution, telecommunications and, water and gas supply lines from the project sites will be done under the support project submitted recently to the PC.

Besides, he added, land acquisition and development for the main construction works will also be conducted.

The RAJUK will then float international tender, inviting bids for building the Arambagh-Bijoynagar-Nayabazar-Babubazar Bridge-Chunkutia (Dhaka-Mawa Road) flyover under public-private partnership (PPP) initiative, he said. A private firm will be engaged with the city development authority.

The flyover would be the largest one in Dhaka to mitigate traffic congestion in Gulisthan and old part of Dhaka.

"The flyover is being set up for developing a faster transportation system between the capital and Dhaka-Mawa road (Jhilmil project). People who would travel from southern part of the country through Padma Bridge would easily be able to enter into the capital city without congestion," he said.

Besides, it is expected to help ensure smooth movement of traffic between north and south of Dhaka city while improving the travel experience in the old part of Dhaka, he added.

Another RAJUK official said the main construction of the flyover will cost nearly Tk 17.42 billion.

"We are hopeful that the private sector will come forward to invest for building the flyover. It can be implemented on built-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) basis," he said.

"Meanwhile, the alignment of the flyover has been changed a little. Initially it was to be started from Shantinagar of the capital city. After the change in design, the starting point shifted to Arambagh in the city," said the official.

He said the last point of the flyover will be Chunkutia (close to Jhilmil project) of Keraniganj on the Dhaka-Mawa highway.
