Living cost jumps by 8.44pc

Living expenditure increased by 8.44 per cent and price of commodity and services jumped by 7.17 per cent in 2017, the Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB) latest study revealed.

In 2016, the expenditure was 6.47 per cent and 5.81 per cent respectively.

The disclosure came from a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters Unity in city on Tuesday.

The CAB prepared the report, after taking into consideration the prices of 114 products, 22 essentials, 14 services in 15 retail markets.

The study said, rice price increased by 20.40 per cent, local onion price rose by 45 per cent, while imported onion price jumped by 57.54 per cent.

Beef price witnessed a 19.72 per cent surge. Meanwhile, liquid milk price increased by 20.30 per cent and cost of gas rose 23 per cent.    

About 20 million hardcore poor got no benefit of development in 2017, the survey added.
