Finance Minister AMA Muhith on Thursday again trashed the remarks on plundering of Tk 225 billion from the banking sector in a decade, terming it politically motivated.

"The information revealed by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) is not correct. A handsome amount of money from those will return. So, I termed the CPD's remark just rubbish," he told newsmen at his secretariat office.

The CPD frequently makes such types of remarks, he said, adding that making such comment, before the national election, is a political stance.

Replying to a query on a remark of Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) officials blaming borrowers for defaulting loans, the minister said bankers also have responsibility in this regard.

The bankers should properly check documents before granting loans, he said.

Mr Muhith said the issue of loan scam at Basic Bank was embarrassing for the government.

"The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was supposed to take action against the chairman of Basic Bank. I am not sure about its progress. But I think such people should be punished," he said.
