Bangladesh attains Asia's highest GDP growth in FY 2020-2021

Bangladesh has been able to achieve a real GDP growth of 5.2 per cent, which is the highest in Asia, in the outgoing fiscal year (FY) 2020-2021.

Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal unveiled this while placing the budget worth Tk 6.03 trillion in parliament on Thursday for the next fiscal year.

"In spite of the pandemic, the government of Bangladesh, led by the able leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has been able to maintain the macroeconomic stability of the economy with prudent fiscal policy and accommodative monetary policy," he said in the budget speech.

According to an IMF report, Mr Kamal noted in the speech, Bangladesh is one of the three countries of the world that achieved highest economic growth in 2020.

According to the World bank, “Bangladesh economy shows early signs of recovery amid uncertainties”, he added.

The Wall Street Journal has recently published an article titled “Bangladesh is Becoming South Asia’s Economic Bull Case”, the finance minister said.

The Indian Express reported “Bangladesh: From a ‘Basket Case’ to a Robust Economy”, he noted, adding that The New York Times published an op-ed article on 10 March, 2021 titled “What Can Biden’s Plan do for Poverty? Look at Bangladesh”.
