3.8m tax returns submitted this year: Muhith

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has said around 3.8 million tax returns were submitted this year.

The minister gave the information on Monday while submitting his tax return through online at the finance ministry in the city, reports BSS.

He informed that the number of taxpayers increased by more than two times in the country over the last three years riding on the responses of people, especially young generation.

“Around 3.8 million returns were already submitted this year. The number was 1.5 million in 2015 while it was only 0.7 million in 2009," the minister said.

Muhith hopes the number of taxpayers will cross 10 million soon as all classes people, especially young, are showing eagerness to pay tax.

“Now, people think, country is giving them many things, they will have to give the country something,” he added.

The finance minister said taxpayers are participating in the welfare of others through paying taxes.

Earlier, he said, people did not want to give income tax, but the attitude has now been changed a lot.

"Now, they consider the tax officials as service providers," he added.

Following the goal set by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina , the government is also providing all sorts of supports to pay tax and join the welfare of the people, he added.

Muhith said the government organised a seven-day income tax fair from November 13 to 19 across the country.

"The fairgrounds witnessed a rush of taxpayers who gathered for submitting their tax returns spontaneously," he added.

Muhith informed that his assets increased to Taka 22.8 million after taking the charge of finance ministry, which was Taka 11.4 million in 2008.

The minister paid Taka 2,22,922 as tax for the 2018-19 fiscal.
