Bangladesh, Uzbekistan agrees to re-start direct flights

Uzbekistan agreed to start Dhaka-Tashkent direct flights, and to ease the procedure to issue visas to Bangladeshis, foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said on Friday.

‘Both the countries agreed to enhance connectivity and strengthen cooperation on agriculture, IT and tourism sector’ the minister said, following his meeting with the visiting Uzbek Deputy Prime Minister in the city.

Uzbekistan considers Bangladesh a key point for strengthening its connectivity in the South Asian region and similarly Bangladesh thinks Uzbekistan can be vital for enhancing connectivity in the central Asian region, the minister said.

Previously there were direct flights between Dhaka and Taskhent and in response to Bangladesh’s proposal the Uzbek minister agreed to restart it.

When Bangladesh proposed to ease visa procedure for Bangladeshis arguing that it will pave the way for a huge number of Bangladeshi tourists to visit the country, the Uzbek minister assured that necessary steps will be taken in this regard.

Bangladesh also proposed to import cotton and fertiliser from Uzbekistan as they produce huge quantities of quality cotton.

The Uzbek DPM said that his country is interested in luring Bangladeshi Pharmaceutical entrepreneurs to start projects there.

Referring to the world class pharmaceutical products of Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Dr Momen urged the Uzbekistan government to import Pharmaceutical products from Bangladesh.

Dr Momen told the Uzbek minister that as Bangladesh has 0.7 million IT freelancers and high quality IT infrastructures, Uzbekistan can take the opportunity to invest in the IT sector.

He also urged the Uzbek government to open a Mission in Bangladesh to further strengthen ties between the two countries.
