Wasa MD refutes water crisis during summer, Ramadan

City dwellers will not face water crisis in the upcoming summer season and during the month of Ramadan.

Managing Director of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) Taqsem A Khan made the comment on Monday.

"Still there may be some problems of water due to technical glitches. But then again Wasa has taken 100 per cent preparations to deal with such glitches," said Taqsem while speaking at a press briefing over Wasa's preparation for dry season held at its conference room in the city.

Wasa has the capacity to produce 244 crore litres of water daily and it is producing and supplying some 235 to 240 crore litres of water each day with 49 crore litres being sourced from surface water. "Wasa has a plan to supply 70 per cent of its total water from surface water sources in future," he said.

The first phase work of the long-term plan of Wasa from 2009 to 2060 is being underway, said Dhaka Wasa MD.

"About 20 million (2.0 crore) of people are getting water from Wasa legally while the government has taken a plan to bring the slum dwellers under it and it will supply water to the people from all walks of life in 2018," said Taqsem.

The Wasa MD said, "The authorities concerned have taken several steps, including double connection power supply, generator facilities, to ensure water supply during frequent load shedding."

Responding to a query about illegal occupation of different canals, Taqsem said, "There are 26 canals under Wasa in Dhaka city which are freed from the illegal encroachers. The authorities concerned have kept vigil and continue the cleaning work of the canals."

Talking about water-logging problem during rainy season, he said, "The low-lying areas around Dhaka city are filled up, causing sufferings to the city dwellers."

Referring to the Wasa preparation during the month of Ramadan, the Dhaka Wasa MD said Wasa has taken necessary steps, including receiving consumers' complains at Wasalink-16162 and at different complain centres round the clock, reports UNB.
