Vegetable, spice prices continue upward trend

Onion, ginger, potato and lentil prices witnessed a hike again last week adding more woe to the consumers.

Garlic prices witnessed a slight hike while loose flour showed a nominal decline during the period.

Onion prices witnessed a significant rise last week as local variety increased to Tk 60-70 per kilogramme (kg) from Tk 45-55 a kg earlier.

Imported Indian varieties of the popular vegetable surged to Tk 50-55 per kg from Tk 40-45 per kg.

The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) recorded a 20 per cent hike of onion prices in a week while it is 60-74 per cent in a month.

Traders said a rise in Indian onion prices caused the hike in Bangladesh.

Import costs surged by 30-40 per cent in the last two weeks, said Narayan Chandra Saha, a Shyambazar based importer.

In this read, the government took several measures to tackle any artificial price hike of onion.

The commerce ministry and Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) have strengthened their market monitoring further.

TCB will also launch open market sale (OMS) of onion through trucks from September 13 to keep the prices and supply of the most-consumed spice.

Bangladesh produces 1.9 million tonnes of onion against demand for 2.5-2.6 million tonnes annually.

The shortfall is met through import mainly from India.

Stored potato prices increased further to Tk 38-42 a kg from Tk 35-36.

Imported Chinese ginger prices increased to Tk 220-260 per kg from Tk 200-220.

Local and Indian Kerala variety of ginger were selling at Tk 150-180 a kg from Tk 130-150 a kg.

Finer lentil prices increased by Tk 10-15 a kg and being sold at Tk 120-130 a kg.

Garlic prices witnessed Tk 10 a kg hike being sold at Tk 80-100(imported) and Tk 100-120 (local) a kg.

However, loose flours (both ata and maida) prices declined by Tk 2.0-3.0 a kg.

Ata was sold at Tk 30-33 and maida at Tk 33-35 per kg on Thursday.

Rice, vegetables and farm eggs prices remained same maintaining their previous high.
