Many unemployed fishermen have become self-reliant by growing vegetables on floating beds in the Harihar river in the Madhyakul Rajvanshipara area at Keshabpur Upazila of Jashore district.

Having failed to catch fish, they are now cultivating floating vegetables in the river.

Anath Bandhu Das, assistant agricultural officer of the upazila, said the Harihar river is full of algae.

So, the fishermen in the Madhyakul Rajvanshipara area became unemployed as they could not catch fish in the river, he said.

The upazila agriculture department took up a project with the aim of producing vegetables

using the algae of the Harihar river in December 2022.

The Agriculture Department trained fishermen and farmers to cultivate vegetables on floating beds.

Farmer Neil Ratan Biswas said after meeting the needs of the family they are making profit by selling the vegetables in the market.

Parul Biswas of Madhyakul Rajvanshipara said she has set up three floating beds in the river.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Rituraj Sarkar said those who do not have agricultural land will benefit from growing vegetables in this way. They are producing poison-free vegetables without using any kind of pesticides, he added.
