Veg cultivation on the rise in Sylhet

SYLHET, Jan 28: Cultivation of all kinds of vegetable is on the rise in Sylhet region this year.

A report prepared by the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) shows so far 53,222 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of vegetable in all the four districts of the division. It includes, 34,525 hectares in Sylhet, 8,690 hectares in Moulvibazar, 9,000 hectares in Habiganj and the rest 11,017 hectares in Sunamganj.

The farming area would be increased further, said additional director of DAE, Sylhet divisional Office, Md Altabur Rahman.

Selected poor farmers were given some assistance this year, he said adding, some of them are growing some non-traditional crops with the common ones.

Besides, a special programme has been taken for bringing barren land under growing crops, the senior official further said.

Abdul Hasib, farmer from Baushi village under Golapganj upazila, said high price has inspired many cultivators to grow vegetables in more land.

Some non-traditional vegetable varieties also became popular due to the better returns, he added.
