The United States has expressed interest to invest in energy sector of Bangladesh and to export liquefied natural gas (LNG).
US Ambassador in Dhaka Marcia Bernicat expressed the interest on behalf of her country during a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday at Ganabhaban in Dhaka.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the reporters after the meeting, reports BSS.
Ihsanul Karim said various issues related to mutual interests were discussed during the meeting.
The US envoy showed her country’s interest to invest in energy sector of Bangladesh.
Bernicat said the United States is keen to export LNG to Bangladesh.
In reply, Sheikh Hasina welcomed the interest of the USA in energy sector.
Sheikh Hasina said government is encouraging private sector in economic activities and development aimed at creating job opportunity for the country’s people.
Bernicat informed the Prime Minister that the USA, as the president of next UN General Assembly, would play strong role in the summit for repatriation of displaced Rohingyas from Bangladesh.
The US envoy informed the Prime Minister that Bangladesh’s export to the USA increased by 61 per cent last year.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister highlighted the steps taken for making the electoral process free, fair and neutral.
Sheikh Hasina also assured that the next general election would be held in the same manner.
“We have accepted defeat in many elections even in a very minor margin, but didn’t try to win through manipulation in any election,” Sheikh Hasina said.
The Prime Minister said her party is ready to welcome any election observer during the upcoming general election.
Prime Minister’s International Affairs Adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, Principal Secretary Nozibur Rahman and PMO Secretary Sazzadul Hassan were present.
