The killing of seven Rohingya people in a Cox’s Bazar Rohingya camp, weeks after the murder of Rohingya leader Muhibullah, caused concern among the development partners.
Reacting to the incident of killing that took place on Friday, UNHCR said it is ‘extremely concerned by another violent attack in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh’.
However, Bangladesh said it is a conspiracy by vested quarter and the perpetrators will be brought to book.
“This incident, which took place in the early morning of October 22, resulted in the death of at least seven refugees and an unspecified number of injured, including children. Those with injuries are currently receiving medical care.” the UN agency said.
The UN body urged the Bangladesh authorities to take immediate measures to improve the security in the refugee camps.
“This includes the arrest and prosecution in accordance with the law of those responsible for instigating and committing these violent attacks”.
Rohingya people fled to Bangladesh seeking safety and security from violence. A large majority of them - some 80 per cent - are women and children.
Meanwhile, commenting on the issue Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said incidents like killing in Rohingya camps and attacks on Hindus were part of a conspiracy by the vested quarter to malign the government and to tarnish the image of the country.
This government has done a lot of things for the welfare of the people and the country. Bangladesh is now a role model for development but a vested quarter, which does not want further advancement of the country is hatching a conspiracy to block the advancement, he told newsmen.
Dr Momen said that steps have been taken to beef up security in Rohingya camps.
