The Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has urged President Md Abdul Hamid to appoint the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) immediately.
In a press statement, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman also expressed its deep concern over the fact that the post of CAG has been lying vacant for more than two months, reports UNB.
He said a constitutional post like that of CAG remaining vacant for such a long time is not coherent with the government's commitment to strengthen institutional competence in the state structure, instil good governance and root out corruption.
The TIB executive director said due to the absence of CAG, proper submission of final audit reports by the various agencies and branches of the state is being hampered, besides risking stagnation in the overall programme of the institution by holding up decision making.
For this reason, TIB drew the attention of the president to take necessary measures to appoint a candidate with the highest qualifications as a new CAG as soon as possible, to facilitate transparency, accountability and good governance.
In the statement TIB also said, as CAG is a member of the governing board of Asia-centred Asian Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions and member of different working groups of the International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions, the absence will have a negative impact in country's standing in the international arena.
Earlier on April 27 this year, the immediate past CAG retired handing over charge to the senior officials in due process.
