TIB demands details of UN, Myanmar's 'secret deal'

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) on Monday demanded disclosure of the details of, what it dubbed, secret agreement signed between Myanmar and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) over Rohingya issue.

In a press statement cited by UNB, TIB executive director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, "According to the leaked information published in the international media the memorandum of understanding (MoU) of UN is contradictory to the proper atmosphere of Rohingya repatriation and trampling their long rational demand of free movement in their motherland as independent citizen of Myanmar."

"The agreement is mainly nothing but a part of conspiracy to trample the possibility of Rohingya repatriation and imposing them upon Bangladesh forever", Iftekharuzzaman added.

"The role of UN raised a question mark mainly about the Myanmar army crackdown and Rohingya repatriation as they irrationally did not disclosed the complete information of their secret memorandum, which was reflected in the recent speech of UN special envoy Yanghee Lee", he said.

"Such self-contradictory and out of principal secret MoU expose the failure of UN on the Rohingya repatriation and questions its sincerity to secure the human rights," he continued.

TIB executive director referred to UN mission in Myanmar's role in keeping secret a report that had alerts on an imminent mass torture and genocide on the Rohingya people much more before their taking refuge to Bangladesh.

Iftekharuzzaman further said, "The question of getting financial interests against the UN by capitalising the humanitarian aid can be raised naturally after witnessing its (UN) performance as silent spectator that doesn't using adequate opportunities to prevent such ethnic cleansing and human right violation."

The United Nation should answer all the questions along with disclosing the complete information of the MoU conducted with Myanmar immediately, he added.
