Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmud has said the Commission will focus on preventing money laundering by corrupt individuals in 2018.
"A group of corrupt people loot people's money and send abroad. The ACC will make its best efforts this year to check money laundering," he said.
The ACC boss came up with the remarks while addressing a human chain programme held in front of the Jatiya Press Club on Wednesday. It was arranged by the Commission marking the Corruption Prevention Week.
ACC officials, employees and panel lawyers, members of civil society and Anti-Corruption Committee, Girls Guide, BNCC joined the human chain programme.
Iqbal Mahmud said the country's progress and achievements in the development and economic sectors and social indexes are appreciable. "Country could have witnessed faster and better economic growth, had the level of corruption been minimised," he added.
The Commission is getting information from several reliable sources that some corrupt businessmen, a few government officials in connivance with some bank officials are siphoning off money abroad through over-invoicing in the name of importing various goods, the ACC chairman said.
Seeking the cooperation of people of all strata, the ACC Chairman said that they will take strong legal action to stop money laundering.
The ACC is observing the Corruption Prevention Week beginning on Monday with the theme: 'If corruption can be stopped, there will be speed in development'.
The ACC also handed over the 'ACC Media Award 2017' to journalists at the conference room of the ACC on Wednesday where State Minister for Finance MA Mannan was the chief guest.
On the fourth day on Thursday, it will also honour members of zila-upazila corruption prevention committees at Jatiya Natyashala of Shilpakala Academy while Finance Minister AMA Muhith will attend the event as the chief guest.
On March 31, a grand rally with the participation of the members of ACC-run 'Satata Sangha' will be held at the Osmani Memorial auditorium where the ACC chairman will conduct an oath-taking session for the young generation.
The week will end on April 1 with a seminar titled 'Accountable administration works as the key to ensuring graft-free society' where Vice-chancellor of Asia Pacific University Dr Jamilur Reza Choudhury will be present as the chief guest, reports UNB.
