'Take steps to stop chaos in transport fare management'

The Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJS) on Wednesday called for immediate measures to stop chaos in the country’s transport fare-management during people’s homecoming on Eid vacation.

The body came up with the demand at a round table discussion at the National Press Club in the city.

The urged the government to take necessary steps to check chaos in transport fare and selling public transport tickets in black-market.   

Secretary General of the Jatri Kalyan Samity Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury at the event said that in the last Eid-ul-Fitr 339 people were killed in 277 road mishaps. Besides, at total 1265 people were injured in those road accidents, he mentioned.

He cited the accident as consequence of careless driving of long-route public transport and goods-laden transports and to meet more trips in short period of time during Eid vacation.

Former National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Dr Mizanur Rahman observed that people are facing difficulties due to absence of rule of law and accountability.

In order to check chaos and disorder in the transport sector there need to restore transparency and check extortion and other illegal means.

Former BRTA Chairman Aiubur Rahman also spoke at the event calling upon the authorities concerned to take necessary action to stop operating unfit vehicles on roads and highways.
