Students cut road safety demo to one hour

The students agitating for road safety on Wednesday announced to shorten their demonstration time to one hour considering the HSC examination which will begin today (Thursday).

The road safety protesters have decided to observe human chains and stage demonstration from 12:00 pm to 1:00pm on limited scale on the roadsides in different city points to ease vehicular movement during the HSC exam.

Meanwhile, demonstrating students blocked Rampura bridge point of the DIT Road in the city again on the day demanding safe road and justice for Mainuddin Islam, 17, who was killed by a speedy bus near Rampura kitchen market on Monday night.

Students from different nearby schools and colleges came to the spot at around 11:15 am and in a procession marched from Rampura Bridge to Rampura kitchen market and came back to the bridge point again.

Besides, they checked licences of drivers and valid documents of vehicles and requested traffic police personnel to fine or file cases against the drivers and vehicles having no document.

At around 1:00pm, they cleared the road after placing additional two points with existing nine-point demand to press for road safety.

One of the agitators, Tawsif Ahmed, a 10th grader of Ekramunnesa High School and College, told the FE: "HSC exam will start from tomorrow (Thursday) and for this reason we'll cut down our demo to one hour from 12pm to 1:00pm so that the exam candidates don't face any problem."

In protest against Mainuddin's death, students of different institutions blocked DIT Road for about five hours from 10:30am to 3:15pm completely halting vehicular movement in the area.

Early Monday night, following the accident, an angry mob, including locals, set at least eight buses afire and vandalised a couple others in between 11:00 pm and 11:45 pm.

Mainuddin, a 10th grader at Rampura Ekramunnesa School and College, had been waiting for the SSC results.

A bus of Green Anabil Paribahan ran over Mainuddin when he was crossing the DIT Road.
