Stop using English letters for Bangla SMS: BTRC

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has directed mobile phone operators not to send Bangla messages in the English alphabet.

The telecom regulator issued a notice that says, "Bangla SMS or mobile messages must be sent in Bangla letters to subscribers."

Besides, it also ordered the mobile operators to stop sending commercial or promotional messages or interactive voice responses (IVRs) to the subscribers between 12am and 6am, and in times of religious activities, reports bdnews24.com.

The regulator also directed the operators to inform the subscribers about the DND (Do Not Disturb) policy through SMS in the next 10 workdays.

TIM Nurul Kabir, secretary general of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh or AMTOB, welcomed the BTRC's move and admitted that Bangla language should be written with Bangla letters.

“But Bangla letters are not available on some mobile handsets. The BTRC needs to ensure that the Bangla letters are available on all handsets,” he said.
