Sonagazi AL leader on five-day remand over Nusrat murder

A Feni court has granted a five-day remand to interrogate Sonagazi Upazila Awami League President Ruhul Amin in custody in a case over the murder of madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Sharaf Uddin Ahmed passed the order granting police the remand of Amin on Saturday evening, court police’s Inspector Golam Jilani said, reports bdnews24.com.

Police Bureau of Investigation or PBI produced Ruhul Amin in the court and sought seven days to grill him, Jilani said.

Amin was detained from his home on Friday. He was later shown arrested in the sensational case.

He is also a vice-president of the dissolved governing council of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrashah.

Shahadat Hossain Shamim, one of the 18 other suspects arrested in the case, reportedly called Amin on phone after an arson attack on Nusrat on April 6.

Before her death on April 10, Nusrat said the attacker set her on fire after she refused to withdraw sexual harassment charges against principal Siraj-ud-Daula.

Siraj was known to have links with Ruhul and Maksud Alam, a ward councillor of Sonagazi Municipality and acting general secretary of the ruling party’s Sonagazi unit.

Maksud, one of the eight accused named in Nusrat murder case, has already been remanded in police custody.
