Seven premature babies of a  woman die in Lakshmipur

Seven premature babies - four girls and three boys - were born of a 18-year-old woman at a hospital in Lakshmipur on Friday night only to die several hours later.

The mother is doing fine, according to reports.

Nazma Akther, 18, wife of expatriate Md Raju, hailing from Laharkandi area of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila, delivered the babies naturally at the City Hospital at 9:45pm.

City Hospital Manager Omar Faruk said, "The babies were born 25 minutes after the woman came to the hospital with labour pains at 9:20 pm."

The newborns died in the latter part of the night, the reports stated.

City Hospital Dr Abdullah Nowsher said, "We recommended shifting the babies to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, or Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital for better treatment.

"But they died in no time, he said, adding: We could not save them owing to their extremely fragile conditions." The babies were born five months before due time.

The babies were in the second trimester when the foetus' lungs, brain and eyes were hardly fully developed.

According to Save the Children in 2016, an estimated 23,600 of 4, 38,800 premature babies die every year in the country.
