The vaccination centres across the country saw scramble for Covid vaccine doses on Tuesday as the governement conducted a special nationwide programme with a target to vaccinate 7.5 million people.
The daylong inoculation campaign was arranged to mark the 75th birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
However, an official of the Direct-orate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the campaign may be extended if the target is not fulfilled Tuesday.
To get the first antidote against the highly infectious Covid-19, people aged over 25 years were seen standing in queues at many vaccination centres in the city from the morning in a festive mood. But premises of some other centres were crammed with people waiting for the shots. The crowd was so large that it was almost impossible to maintain social distancing at those centres.
Some vaccine aspirants in the long queue of a city centre alleged that they have got a chance to stand in a line to receive the first shot one and a half months after registering for a jab. Those who will receive the first shot during the campaign will be given the second dose next month, according to the DGHS.
Visiting Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, a long line of vaccine receivers was found there. Talking to the FE, one of the receivers, Mohammad Siraj, said he registered himself to get the jab early last month but did not get the SMS that frustrated him.
