On average more than 13 people were killed each day of June in road accidents across Bangladesh amid lockdown, according to a report of Road Safety Foundation (RSF).
The report released on Wednesday expressed concern over such uncontrolled road accidents and casualties.
It showed that a total of 398 people were killed and 423 others injured in 327 road accidents during the period in the country.
Among the deceased, 52 were women and 33 children. Besides, 94 pedestrians also were killed which is 23.61 per cent of the total deaths.
The report identified the reasons behind the road accidents include reckless driving, unfit vehicles, lack of skill, mentally and physically unfitness of drivers etc.
The RSF prepared the report based on news items of seven national dailies, five online news portals and visual media.
It found that the rate of accidents involving motorcycles was 43.42 per cent in June. Around 151 persons were killed by 142 motorcycle accidents which are 37.93 per cent of deaths last month.
A second highest 57 people who died in road accidents were the passengers of three-wheelers followed by 38 were truck and pickup-trolley passengers.
The highest number of accidents took place in Dhaka division with the highest number of deaths. Some 103 people died in 86 accidents in Dhaka division, the report also mentioned.
The lowest one was in Sylhet with 23 accidents and 22 deaths.
The number of deaths was 562 and road accidents 441 in May last.
The RSF’s suggestions include increasing skilled drivers, strengthening the capability of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) and enforcement of the existing laws to check road accidents in the country.
