At least 37 people have died in road accidents in Gaibandha, Rangpur, Natore, Gopalganj, Faridpur, Savar, Sirajganj, Tangail, Narsingdi and Chuadanga.
Eighteen people were killed after a bus overturned in Palashbari Upazila of Gaibandha, reports bdnews24.com.
Six were killed after a crash between a bus and truck in Rangpur district. Three more were killed in two separate accidents in Gopalganj.
Two others were killed in Natore after their auto rickshaw was rammed by a truck, two more died after a bus fell into a ditch in Faridpur's Bhanga and another two were killed in a collision between a bus and truck in Sirajganj.
In addition, another person died in a collision between a bus and a truck in Savar’s Aminbazar, a motorcycle rider was killed in Tangail’s Shakhipur after he has rammed by a bus.
Two pedestrians were run over by motorcycles in separate incidents in Narsingdi and Chuadanga.
Over 50 others were injured in the road accidents, according to local police officials.
Most of the victims have yet to be identified.
Police say some of the victims were on their way back from spending Eid holidays with their families.
GAIBANDHA
At least 18 people have been killed and 40 others injured after a bus hit a roadside tree and overturned in Gaibandha’s Palashbari Upazila.
The accident occurred on the Rangpur-Dhaka Highway in the Bashkata (Gorurhat) area near the BRAC intersection around 4:30am on Saturday, said Govindganj Highway Police OC Akhtaruzzaman.
The Rangpur-Dhaka Highway was closed to traffic for nearly an hour-and-a-half following the accident.
Traffic returned to normal after rescue workers moved the bus from the road, the OC said.
The Alam Enterprise Paribahan bus was headed from Dhaka to Thakurgaon's Ranishangkoil when it veered out of control and struck a raintree, said Akhtaruzzaman.
The front of the bus was crushed in the accident and seven people were killed on the spot.
Eleven others died after police and the fire service conducted rescue operations and sent victims to the Palashbari Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
A few of the victims have been sent to Rangpur and Bagura's Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for treatment, the OC said.
The bodies of eight victims were returned to their families. They were identified as Emdad Ali, Yunus Ali, Minarul Khan, Masud Rana, Abdur Rashid, Zahirul Islam, Rubel Mia and Akhtarul Islam.
Most of the dead are cattle traders, garment workers and labourers, the OC said.
The Rangpur-Dhaka Highway was blocked for an hour-and-a-half after the accident, but the traffic situation improved once rescue workers had moved the bus from the road.
Police say the neglect of the bus driver or drowsiness due to lack of sleep may have been responsible for the crash.
Palashbari Upazila Project Implementation Official Md Shahinur Alam said that the family of each of the dead would receive Tk 10,000 in compensation from the district administration.
RANGPUR
Six people were killed after a standing double-decker BRTC bus was rammed by a truck on the Rangpur-Dinajpur Highway near Shaleashah Bazar in Rangpur’s Sadar Upazila.
At least 13 others were injured in the accident, which occurred around 2am on Saturday, said Taraganj Highway Police OC Abdullah Hel Baki.
The BRTC Eid Special double-decker bus was headed from Dinajpur to Dhaka when one of its wheels punctured in the Shaleashah Bazar area.
The driver and his assistants parked the bus on the side of the road and were changing the tire. Some passengers had also disembarked to observe the process.
At this time a sand-bearing truck struck the bus from behind, killing six on the spot.
Three fire service units arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations and sent the injured to the Taraganj Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College for treatment.
All of the dead were bus passengers, said OC Abdullah Hel Baki. Two of them have been identified as Nishat and Sajjad.
“Both are between 25 and 30 years of age. They are believed to be garment workers returning to Dhaka after Eid holidays.”
NATORE
Two auto rickshaw passengers have been killed after their vehicle was rammed by a sand-bearing truck in Natore town.
The accident occurred around 6:30am on Saturday morning near the Natore Central Jamme Mosque, said Sadar Police OC Mashiur Rahman Sikder.
The dead have been identified as Sudishna Debnath, 55, and his neighbour Kanaichandra, 30.
Sudishna’s wife and daughter were also injured in the accident and admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The four were headed to Natore Mission Hospital to receive treatment when their auto rickshaw was rammed from behind by a truck.
Natore Central Jamme Mosque Muazzin Akbar Hossain says he was an eyewitness to the accident.
“The auto rickshaw was crushed by the speeding truck,” he said.
The truck quickly fled the scene, but police are working to identify it, said OC Mashiur Rahman Sikder.
GOPALGANJ
Two people have been killed and 11 others injured after a bus rammed a motorcycle in Gopalganj.
The accident occurred on the Gopalganj-Tungipara Road in the Ghonapara area of Gopalganj’s Sadar Upazila around 7:45am on Saturday.
The deda have been identified as Resource Integration Centre (REC) Gopalganj Branch Registrar Imran Hossain, 38, and field worker Palak Bapari, 34, both of whom were on the motorcycle.
The two were returning to Gopalganj after spending their Eid holidays in Pirojpur, said REC Accountant Saiful Islam.
A local bus headed from Bagerhat to Gopalganj veered out of control and struck the motorcycle, said Gopalganj Sadar SI Shawkat Hossain.
The bus tried to flee and struck a van and another bus in the process, he said, but was blocked by the road divider. Ten people on the bus and van were injured in the accident.
Police and fire service personnel have cleared the road.
A van driver has been killed and ten bus passengers have been injured after a bus rammed a van in Gopalganj’s Muksudpur Upazila around 12:30pm on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Lokman Sheikh, 50.
Six of the injured have been admitted to Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
The Hameem Paribahan bus rammed the van while trying to swerve around another bus, said Muksudpur OC Mostofa Kamal Pasha.
Ten of the bus passengers were injured when the bus then fell into a ditch on the side f the road.
The OC said that the injured were recovered and sent to Muksudpur Upazila Health Complex by rescue workers.
FARIDPUR
Two people have been killed after a Tuhin Paribahan bus fell into a ditch in Faridpur’s Bhanga. At least 20 others have been injured in the incident.
The accident occurred around 9am on the Dhaka-Barisal highway in the East Sadardi area.
The bus was headed from Barisal to Rajshahi around 9am when it veered out of control, said Faridpur Fire Service Senior Station Master Saifuzzaman.
At least 20 people were injured in the incident.
The injured were rescued and taken to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and Bhanga Hospital for treatment.
The dead have yet to be identified.
SIRAJGANJ
A truck driver and his assistant were killed and ten bus passengers were injured after a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Sirajganj’s Raiganj.
The accident occurred early on Saturday in the Kalikapur area on the Bagura-Nagarbari Highway, said Raiganj Fire Service Station Officer Mozzamel Hossain.
The dead have been identified as truck driver Sharif Uddin and his assistant Shafiqul Islam.
The RK Paribahan bus headed from Dhaka to Bagura crashed head-on into a sand-bearing truck, said Fire Service official Hossain.
The truck driver and his assistant died on the spot, while the injured were rescued and sent to Sirajganj Sadar and Raiganj Upazila Hospital, he added.
SAVAR
A man has been killed after a collision between a bus and a truck in Dhaka’s Savar.
According to Savar Police OC Mohsinul Quadir, the accident occurred on the Dhaka-Aricha Highway near Aminbazar around 8am on Saturday.
The Druti Paribahan bus was headed to Dhaka when it crashed into a truck making a u-turn, said Police Inspector Sajjad Hossain. One passenger was killed on the spot.
Several others were injured in the accident, but police did not state where the victims were receiving medical treatment.
TANGAIL
A motorcycle rider has been killed after his vehicle was rammed by a bus in Tangail’s Shakhipur.
The accident occurred on the Shakhipur-Gopeenpur Road in the Toildhara Bota intersection on Saturday afternoon, said Shakhipur Police OC SM Tuhin Ali.
The deceased has been identified as Abdul Based Mia, 30.
According to OC Ali, Mia was travelling to Chapra Bil from Shakhipur to fish when a bus travelling in the opposite direction crashed head-on into it, injuring him critically.
Locals rescued Mia and sent him to Tangail General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police have impounded the bus, but were unable to detain the driver, the OC said.
NARSINGDI
An elderly pedestrian has been struck and killed by a motorcycle in Narsingdi’s Raipura.
The accident occurred on Saturday afternoon in the upazila’s Marzal Lucky Akhtar Park area, said Raipura Police Inspector Md Lutfer Rahman.
The deceased has been identified as Hassan Mia.
A local man, 22-year-old Shohag, was riding his motorcycle from the nearby Joshor Bazar to the Marzal bus stand when he hit Hassan Mia on the side of the road, said Rahman.
“The critically injured Hassan Mia was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.”
Police have impounded the motorcycle but Shohag has fled, he added.
CHUADANGA
A pedestrian has been killed after being run over by a motorcycle in Alokdia village in Chuadanga’s Sadar Upazila.
The accident occurred around 10:30pm on Friday night near the main road two the village, said Chuadanga Sadar Police OC Delwar Hossain Khan. Two motorcycle passengers were injured in the incident, he added.
The pedestrian was identified as Obaidur Rahman, 50, while the motorcycle passengers were Mohsin Ali, 26, and Masud Rana, 28.
The injured have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Rana and Ali were headed from Chuadanga to Meherpur on the motorcycle when they struck Obaidur Rahman as he was standing on the side of the road, the OC said. Rahman was killed on the spot.
Rahman was handed over to the family without an autopsy at their request, Khan added.
