Road accidents claim 5,227 lives in 2019

At least 5,227 people were killed and some 6,953 others were injured in 4,702 road accidents across the country in 2019, multiplying the number of victims compared to last two years.

Nirapad Sarak Chai (NISCHA), an organisation that works for road safety, revealed the information at a press conference in Jatiya Press Club in Dhaka on Saturday. NISCHA Chairman Ilias Kanchan addressed the press conference.

Among the deceased, 50 per cent were pedestrians and 22 per cent were drivers in 2019, the organisation said.

It also mentioned that in 2018 a total of 3,103 road accidents killed 4,039 people and injured 7,425 others.

The report was prepared on the basis of news reports of 11 national dailies, online news portals, TV channels, and information collected from the branch offices of NISCHA. 

The organisation identified some causes prompted road accident in the country, including unskilled and uneducated drivers, faulty vehicles and roads and poor traffic management.

Besides, lack of awareness among pedestrians and drivers on traffic rules apart from prevailing lack of rule of law and political will to bring road safety.
