Rakhine violence toll reaches 90

The death toll from Rakhine violence reached 90 as a Rohingya man shot by Myanmar’s security forces while fleeing to Bangladesh died at a hospital in Chittagong on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Md Musa, 22, a resident of Myanmar’s Maungdaw town. He succumbed to his injuries at 11:15am on Saturday at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

Rohingyas have been attempting to flee across the border into Bangladesh since Friday after insurgents attacked 30 police posts in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and killed 12 security personnel.

Friday’s violence also left at least 77 insurgents killed and several others injured.

Myanmar security forces have also opened fire on Rohingya refugees fleeing to Bangladesh from bordering Rakhine state on Saturday afternoon.

Security was beefed up at the border after Saturday’s incident, said Lt Col Manjurul Hassan Khan, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar 34 Battalion.

“They fired three to four rounds around 1:15pm,” he said. “There were no casualties.”

The Myanmar Border Guard Police, or BGP, fired at the Rohingyas seeking refuge on the border with Bandarban’s Naikhyangchhari Upazila.

Several thousand Rohingyas are currently occupying a four-mile stretch on the shore of the Naf River in Cox’s Bazar’s Ukhia, awaiting decisions from Bangladesh authorities. - agencies
