Representatives of the Rajbangshi community at a programme on Wednesday demanded that the community be re-enlisted officially as an ethnic minority people, reports UNB.
At the programme organised by Bangladesh Rajbangshi Welfare Association at the National Press Club in the city, the speakers said the community had been included as an ethnic group in all censuses from 1991 to 2011.
For unknown reasons, the community was excluded from the list of ethnic minority people, they added.
Speaking as the chief guest, RAM Obaidul Muktadir Chowdhury, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, said the community has a separate identity and cultural entity.
"As they are minority people, they shouldn't be left behind and it's the duty of the country to ensure this," he said.
