Rains may accompany people home during the Eid-ul-Fitr, which is set to be held at a time when the monsoon lingers in the country, Met office says.

"Rains may intensify from May 31 after sporadically taking place in the country for four days from May 27 to May 30," said Abdul Mannan, a weather expert.

Shamsuddin Ahmed, director of the country's Meteorological Department, said there may be heavy rains in Netrokona, Mymensingh and Sylhet regions during the days before Eid.

However, he said, it may not rain relatively much in the central and southern parts of the country, including Dhaka, but the skies will remain cloudy.

Where roads are not in good condition, holidaymakers may face problems on the way, but air and railway travels will not be hampered by the type of rains that could be forecast now, Ahmed added.

Mosharraf Hossain, manager of Hanif Paribahan, said buses cannot leave for or reach destinations on time due to traffic jams caused by rains, and so public sufferings may mount should it rain ceaselessly during this Eid.

Holidays will start for some from May 31, for some from June 3 and for most others from June 4 during this Eid, which is set to be held on June 5, local media reports say.

This Eid turns out to be a holiday bonanza for government employees who can get nine days of holidays from May 31 to June 8 in a row if they take an optional leave for June 3 only.

According to law enforcement agencies, some 5.5 to 6.0 million people leave Dhaka every Eid and it may cross 8.0 million this time with government employees set to get more than a week of holidays.
