CHATTOGRAM: People of Chattogram suffered on Saturday as rain-triggered water-logging, the perennial problem in the port city, rendered them stranded for several hours.
Sources at the local Met office said the downpour started at 6am this morning and continued for three hours till 9am.
The port city also witnessed rains on Friday. Officials at the meteorological department in Patenga said a total of 5 millimetre (mm) of rainfall was recorded in the last 24 hours, from Friday 9am to 9am Saturday.
The three-hour shower today inundated major parts of the port city, including its low-lying areas.
Witnesses said today's non-stop downpour left the city's low-lying Bakalia, Chandgaon, Bahadderhat, Chawk Bazar, Badurtala, Nasirabad, Halishahar, Patenga, Kattali and Chaktai under knee-deep water.
Inhabitants of those areas remained confined to their homes and workplaces for several hours, they said.
The affected city-dwellers noted that a few minutes' normal rain can also cause water-logging in the low-lying areas.
During today's heavy shower, the city streets looked deserted as movement of vehicles remained stopped for a few hours and pedestrians also stayed off roads for several hours, said the city-dwellers.
The rain heavily affected the normal life today, they added.
