Pro-workers rights slogans fill air

Pro-workers rights slogans have filled the air of Paltan, one of the busiest areas in Dhaka city, marking the May Day.

The slogans were chanted from various rallies which have been being taken out since around 8 in the morning Tuesday.

Workers of the world, unite!, one of the famous rallying cries from the Communist Manifesto, dominated the rallies.

As elsewhere in the world, workers in Bangladesh take to streets, celebrating the international workers’ holiday of May Day every year.

Among them, those in the garments industry often come in the news for their protests over the wage arrears and other rights.

A day before the May Day of this year, a survey shows that the majority of labour unrest that took place last year was over the payment of wages arrears with highest number of such incidents in the apparel sector.

In Bangladesh, the day is a public holiday and all public and private offices, courts, banks, mills and factories remain closed.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the eve of the May Day. They extended their greetings to all working people of the world, including in the country.
