President urges doctors to follow ‘Code of Medical Ethics’

Terming the medical profession a very noble one, President Abdul Hamid on Saturday urged the doctors to abide by 'Code of Medical Ethics' to ensure proper health services, professional standard and dignity.

"There is a 'Code of Medical Ethics' for doctors and others concerned across the world and its objective is to ensure medical services to the patients maintaining professional standards and dignity. I believe that physicians of our country will be respectful to this professional ethics," he said while addressing the 29th Annual Conference and International Scientific Sessions-2018 organised by Association of Physicians of Bangladesh (APB) at Hotel Sonargaon in the city on Saturday afternoon.

"There are so many professions in the world and of those medical profession is one of the best ones. And for this, the doctors and other concerned should render their best services to the patients," the President said.

He said people go to physicians hoping that they will come round from their illnesses by following their prescriptions. Under the circumstances, the doctors should put their utmost sincerity to the patients, he added.

Referring to media reports, President Hamid said in some cases it is seen that people become the worst victims of wrong treatment or negligence of the physicians or they face various kinds of harassments at the hospitals. "You must remain alert in this regard to save the image of your great profession," he said.

Observing that the nature and type of diseases are different in different countries and regions, he said disease trends may also change for climate impacts.

He urged the specialised physicians to conduct medical education and research activities considering the nature and type of diseases as well as climate change.

The President also put emphasis on creating awareness about maintaining healthy life to get rid of many curable diseases.

Saying that the ratio of physicians and population in the country is not proportionate, he urged the physicians to serve their level best so that no patient is deprived of getting healthcare services.

President hoped that the physicians will gain knowledge through the valued presentation and deliberations of foreign participants attended at the programme.

"It will also open a new horizon for the doctors to exchange views and the latest development of medical sciences. I wish you all a good health, happiness and prosperity in the coming days," he said.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim, president of Bangladesh Medical Association Dr Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Dr Kanak Kanti Barua, President of the APB Prof Dr Md Azizul Kahhar and its general secretary Prof Dr SM Mostafa Zaman also spoke on the occasion, reports UNB.
