President Hamid to take oath on April 24

President Md Abdul Hamid will take his oath of office for his second consecutive term as the country’s 21st president on April 24.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will conduct the oath-taking ceremony that evening at the Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall.

The President’s Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin on Saturday said that the swearing-in ceremony was pushed back to April 24 from April 15.

A top government official said, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will go abroad on Sunday for an eight-day visit, causing the postponement.

Prior to Hamid, 16 people had served as Bangladesh’s president since independence.

Hamid is the 17th and the first to receive the position for a second consecutive term. The country’s constitution states that a president can serve a maximum two terms.

On February 7, Hamid was re-elected as the president of the country uncontested. His present five-year tenure will expire on Apr 23 as he first took office on Apr 24, 2013.

Hamid became the acting president after the death of Zillur Rahman on Mar 20, 2013.

Later, he was elected uncontested as the 20th president of Bangladesh on Apr 22, 2013.
