President asks UN to continue pressing Myanmar

President Abdul Hamid has urged the United Nations (UN) to continue mounting pressure on Myanmar to solve the Rohingya crisis.

Describing the Rohingya influx as a big burden, Abdul Hamid also sought continuous support from UN and other international agencies to repatriate the refugees from Bangladesh with dignity.

Abdul Hamid made call when outgoing UN resident coordinator to Bangladesh Robert D Watkins met him at Bangabhaban on Tuesday.

President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting, A UNB report said.

The President appreciated the role of the UN and other international agencies over the issue.

He thanked the UN for helping Bangladesh achieve the targets of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The President hoped that it will continue its support to the country to attain the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Robert D Watkins expressed his gratitude to the President for providing support to perform his assignment in Dhaka.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will continue its support to Bangladesh in the future, the UN official said.

He also hailed the role of Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue.

The UN envoy said the UNDP will provide support to the Election Commission of Bangladesh to strengthen its capacity.
