Stating that the current government is worse than previous autocratic regimes, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said they are working to unite people to ‘restore democracy’ and free their chairperson Khaleda Zia through a mass movement, reports UNB.
“Many people say the current government is an autocratic one. But it’s in fact the father of autocracy…autocrats have a minimum level. Ershad was an autocrat, but the situation was not like the present one during his rule. Ayub Khan was a dictator, but the situation was not worst like the current one at that time,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “It’s a fascist regime where one person is all in all, no-one else has any say. We’re trying to unite people. We’ll create a mass movement with the united efforts of all people, irrespective of their party and opinion, to free Khaleda Zia and democracy.”
Jatiyatabadi Swechchasebak Dal arranged the programme at the Supreme Court Bar auditorium, marking BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s 54th birth anniversary.
Fakhrul said he believes the current government will be ousted soon as fascism cannot last for a long time.
He called upon BNP leaders and activists to get united forgetting all the confusion and misunderstanding among them to gain huge strength to ‘restore’ democracy dislodging the current government.
The BNP leader claimed that their party chairperson Khaleda Zia was sent to jail only for raising voice in favour of the country and democracy.
He alleged that though ministers and MPs get bail after being convicted in cases like Khaleda’s, she is not being granted bail for political reasons.
Fakhrul compared the government with the main character of noted playwright Selim Al Deen’s drama ‘Muntasir Fantasy’ as it is eating up everything of the country.
“This government has started eating up everything. I saw Semil Al Deen’s nice drama Muntasir Fantasy where the main character Muntasir eats up whatever he sees out of his uncontrollable hunger. They (govt) are now acting like Muntasir and eating up everything, including casino and mega projects. They’re now playing with the prices of essential items like onion and salt,” he observed.
The BNP leader said the government’s main target is to hang onto power by any means and amass wealth and money through plundering. “They siphon off their money and keep their family members abroad as they have no to time to think about people.”
He said people want this government to go immediately as they are fed-up with its ‘misrule’.
