Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has advised the BNP to be patient in order to get permission for their rally at Suhrawardy Udyan.

The road transport and bridges minister made the remark during a discussion programme on Saturday morning after the BNP were refused police permission for a rally at the Dhaka venue on Saturday evening.

“Don’t scream and shout about it,” he said. “You will get permission.”

The event attended by Quader was held by the Sheikh Rasel Children and Adolescents Council at the National Museum in Shahbag to commemorate Sheikh Hasina’s birthday.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said on Friday that there was no problem if permission was granted on Sunday.

“Yesterday I saw on a talk show that they were questioning why they need permission from the police,” said Quader. “Listen, getting permission from the police is a matter of procedure. The governing party also has to receive permission.”

“I have spoken to the police IG. Do not complain about it. Be patient and you will get permission. Don’t cause unnecessary unrest. Police are taking preparations.”

“The prime minister has opened the Suhrawardy Udyan to all. If necessary we will set up an open stage and set up the microphones,” the Awami League general secretary said.

He also warned the BNP not to be ‘dramatic’, reports bdnews24.

“For ten years they have been unable to take to the streets for 10 minutes. But when they get permission for a rally they’ll say ‘the government was forced to grant permission’. You will get your permit, but don’t be dramatic about it.”
