People reject BNP due to its destructive politics, says Obaidul Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday said the country's people have rejected the BNP due to its negative and destructive politics.

"The people no longer want the BNP for its negative and destructive politics, realising that they (BNP) have taken a stand against the people," the road transport minister told a press conference at his secretariat office in Dhaka, reports BSS.

Quader said the people of Bangladesh are happy with the development and achievements of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's government.

"That's why they will choose Awami League in the next national elections too. So, the BNP has started intriguing and lying to make the election process questionable," he added.

The Awami League general secretary said, “It seems that the situation of BNP is now like a pathless pedestrian who has lost his or her course, while the BNP leaders do not know what they say.”

Responding to an allegation of BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the AL general secretary said in fact, not the Awami League, the BNP has now taken a stand against the people after being rejected by them.

He said, “The country's people know that the Awami League practises politics for the welfare of commoners and their emancipation.”

“Because of the skilled leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh has gained recognition in the world today,” Quader said.

"We have cent per cent confidence in people, so there is no need to play with elections. According to the Constitution, the next elections will be held in time and it will be held under the independent the Election Commission (EC)," he said.

The road transport and bridges minister said the BNP knows better to play games with elections. It played games with the February 15 election in 1996 and Magura and Dhaka-10 by-polls.

Asking the BNP leaders to keep confidence in the democratic process and the people and join polls, he said the people are the source of power.

Earlier, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh Mercy Tembon paid a courtesy call on Obaidul Quader.

During the meeting, Tembon lauded the positive progress and unprecedented development of the country's economy under the leadership of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying the World Bank is proud of Bangladesh.

Quader stressed the need for speedy implementation of road safety projects funded by the World Bank.
